Why Andersen Has a Product Lifecycle Policy

Our Product Lifecycle Policy was developed for three important reasons.

Our sterilization equipment is designed to prevent operator exposure to ethylene oxide gas. While we are able to extend the life of a sterilizer for up to 15 years after installation with annual preventative maintenance, we can no longer guarantee its safe and reliable operation after that point.

Andersen proudly manufactures its equipment in the U.S. and sources most components domestically, but due to rapid technological changes, replacement parts for older sterilizers cannot always be guaranteed, despite our goal of supporting systems for up to 15 years after purchase.

Medical device manufacturers are required to establish an expected useful life for their products, and Andersen has validated its sterilization systems for 10 years of service. With annual qualified maintenance, that validated and supported lifecycle can be extended to 15 years, after which replacement is required.

We recommend planning to replace your sterilization system between 10 and 15 years of service. With annual preventive maintenance through Andersen’s certified Field Service Program, many systems can continue to operate safely and reliably for up to 15 years. Replacing older equipment helps ensure continued access to service, replacement parts, and the latest advancements in safety and sterilization technology.

Every Andersen sterilization system progresses through three lifecycle phases.

Useful Life
(0-10 Years)

During this period, Andersen supports your equipment with:

  • Preventive maintenance
  • Technical service
  • Operator training
  • Supplies and accessories

This timeframe reflects our ability to support the equipment with available replacement parts while ensuring reliable, safe, and effective sterilization.

Mature Life
(10–15 Years)

With annual preventive maintenance performed through Andersen’s certified Field Service Program, many sterilization systems can safely continue operating for up to 15 years.

Equipment in this phase requires annual preventive maintenance to help ensure safe, reliable operation. Replacement parts for older sterilizers cannot always be guaranteed, and a system may become No Longer Serviceable sooner than expected.

No Longer Serviceable
(15 + Years)

At this phase, we cannot guarantee a system’s safe and reliable operation. Andersen can no longer provide:

  • Field service support
  • Replacement parts
  • Ethylene oxide (EO) gas refill kits
  • Ongoing equipment support

Replacement of the sterilizer is required to continue receiving Andersen support.

Our certified Field Service Program is designed to support your sterilization system throughout its operational life.

Preventive maintenance helps:

  • Maintain safe and effective sterilization performance
  • Identify wear before it affects operation
  • Replace key components according to manufacturer recommendations
  • Extend equipment support into the Mature Life phase
  • Help you plan for future equipment replacement

For systems operating beyond 10 years, annual preventive maintenance is required to remain eligible for continued Andersen support, including the purchase of EO gas refill kits.
