Andersen Goes “Wild” With Avian & Exotic Animal Care Veterinary Hospital

Andersen Sterilizers representatives recently took a walk on the wild side during an in-service training at Avian and Exotic Animal Care Veterinary Hospital, based in Raleigh, NC. Unlike traditional veterinary clinics, the practice does not treat domesticated animals such as cats or dogs. Instead, it focuses on other species, ranging from fish to zoo animals.

The visit was more than just to provide sterilizer training; it was an opportunity to witness the clinic’s remarkable work in action. Before the training session began, Dr. Salina Locke, a vet tech and pre-vet student, was caring for a red-shouldered hawk that had been discovered lying on the ground, covered in dirt and struck by a car. On its second day at the hospital, the hawk opened its eyes for the first time since its rescue, earning a “quietly alert” status on the twice-daily wellness report. Despite its injuries, the hawk remains fiercely beautiful and now has a chance at recovery, thanks to Dr. Locke and the dedicated team at Avian and Exotic Animal Care.

Dr. Dan Johnson, known to many as “Dr. Dan,” is the head veterinarian at the clinic. He is Board Certified in Exotic Companion Mammal Practice by the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (ABVP) and a former president of the Association of Exotic Mammal Veterinarians (AEMV). A nationally recognized lecturer, Dr Dan frequently publishes content about avian and exotic animal medicine. That’s where Andersen’s relationship with the clinic began: at VMX (Veterinary Meeting & Expo) in Orlando, Florida, during his lecture on intubation, earlier this month.

The clinic recently invested in additional endoscopy equipment, and Dr. Dan emphasized to his team the importance of dependable, safe and instrument-friendly sterilization. “The Anprolene sterilizer is significantly safer for a $10,000 scope than an autoclave,” he explained. “At just $23 per cycle, there’s plenty we can throw in there. We expect to run one or two cycles a week.”

Avian and Exotic Animal Care joins thousands of veterinary clinics worldwide that benefit from Andersen’s low-temperature sterilizers, which complement traditional autoclaves. Andersen’s tabletop sterilizers are affordable, versatile, easy to use, and provide a gentle yet effective sterilization solution. Most importantly, they help preserve and extend the life of delicate instruments, including electronics, drills, fiber optics, cameras, plastics, and rubber items.

Welcome to the Andersen family, Dr. Dan and team!
